Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth exploration of qualitative research methodologies and interviewing techniques within the context of community-engaged research. Students will examine the principles and practices of qualitative study design, and data collection, with a specific focus on engaging communities as active partners in the research process. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, hands-on exercises, case studies, and practical applications, students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to design, conduct, and analyze qualitative research studies that prioritize community perspectives and promote social justice.

Course Objectives:
- Understand the foundational principles and theories underlying qualitative research methodologies and their relevance to community-engaged research.
- Learn the fundamentals of qualitative study design, including selecting appropriate research questions, identifying sampling strategies, and designing data collection instruments such as interview guides and focus group protocols.
- Develop proficiency in qualitative data collection techniques, particularly in conducting semi-structured interviews and facilitating focus groups in community settings.
- Explore ethical considerations and challenges inherent in conducting qualitative research with communities, including issues of power dynamics, confidentiality, informed consent, and cultural sensitivity.
